Hello! My name is Ben and I'm a full-time Academic Advisor with Truckee Meadows Community College. Like a lot of students, I was completely lost when I started college. I knew college was the next step I was supposed to take after high school, but I had never really processed what it meant to be a college student. After all, I was barely conscious for most of my senior year of high school (I won the Sleeps Most in Class award at my senior assembly--booyah).
I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I didn't have any academic aspirations; I was kind of just spinning my wheels for a while, taking classes, not sure where I'd land. I started off as a music major, then switched to psychology, then to electrical engineering, and after having received a D in MATH 127 (Precalc II), I was pretty close to throwing in the towel. The following semester--this was probably semester four? Somewhere in there--I decided to take a creative writing English course. I wouldn't necessarily say I fell in love, but I definitely felt I had found my niche: something that I felt I was good at and I knew I could improve upon. So I stuck with it and ultimately received my bachelor's degree in English after a total of about 5 and a half years.
I like to tell students this story because I want them to know that while Higher Education is important and can lead to a lot of great things, it is almost never a linear path, even though we're conditioned to think it is, and there's going to be a lot of craziness you experience along the way. This is why advisors exist and one of the reasons I love my job. I get to help students navigate all the confusion and stress and doubt many people experience with a college education--myself included. So if you're ever feeling like you want to talk to someone who has been there, feel free to make an appointment with me and we'll figure out the best way through.
Keep it real, dudes.
